I was 10 years and 9 months old when God touched my life for missionary service. I remember it well, because it was the July my middle brother was born.

When my family and I went to church that July Sunday morning, we learned that the missionary family to southern Mexico that our church supported, would be ministering in the service. In those days, adults and children worshiped together. I’m so glad that was the case, because I got to hear the missionaries tell us their stories.

In addition, their 15 year old daughter, who had a beautiful singing voice, was asked to sing. She sang, “The Name of Jesus.” Let me share the words with you.

“The name of Jesus is so sweet. I love it’s music to repeat. It makes my joy full and complete. The precious name of Jesus. (chorus:) Jesus, oh how sweet the name. Jesus, everyday the same. Jesus, let all saints proclaim His worth praise forever.”

She sang it first in English. Then she sang it in Spanish. And when she sang it in Spanish,,,something happened on the inside of me that I did not understand nor could I explain. But I was never to be the same after that. I had been touched by God’s Holy Spirit, and I was changed.

In that short span of time I saw the faces of many people from other parts of the world. My heart went out to them, and I wanted to go to them. I did not tell my parents about my experience, nor anyone else. I don’t know why. I Just held it in my heart like Mary pondered the message from Gabriel, saying she would give birth to the Son of God and call His name Jesus.

After that Sunday, every time missionaries came to our church, that “touch” would stir in me again, and I wanted to go with them. Wherever it was.

It’s much like when “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters” in Genesis 1:2. There you are. Wherever “there” is. Minding your own business. When SUDDENLY, unannounced, the Spirit of God blows across your spirit, your “waters,” and change begins to happen in you. You can’t define it. The “shape” has not yet appeared. But..You’re marked for Him. For His design and purpose in your life. And…You are changed.
